2018 Meursault Caillerets Domaine Coche-Dury Cult Wines

In reality there are no wine from the Domaine which is harvested on more than 1 ha of Vineyard, and therefore the quantities of all wines are quite limited. The prices are largely outside of the control of JFC, his ex-cellar prices are not so high – at least if there was some wine left to sell! – but the middlemen continue to make hay while the sun shines.
The disconnect between the lifestyle of the Coches and the reputation of their cultish wines is marked, to say the least. The Appellation used to describe the wines depends on the variety, Pinot or Chardonnay, and the adjacent Appellation. bouchard pere & fils chassagne-montrachet For example, the cluster next to Volnay uses the Appellation Volnay-Santenot for the red Premier Cru’s. This makes sense when you consider the reputation for reds from Volnay. Whites from the same area use Meursault Premier Cru.

The palate is chewy on the entry, a little tough at the moment but possessing plenty of matière and delivering spicy dark berry and mulberry fruit toward the grippy finish. PNP. Flinty nose, with some nectarine and lemon. Chalky and lively palate, tons of acid and some nuanced and compressed citrus and orchard fruit. Shows beautifully and better than expected from a  solar vintage like 18. The wines we tasted may have conformed to each domaine’s reputation but there are signs of change.

Full, rich, creamy, on palate with citrus, and grapefruit and strong acidity providing the base. Village wines blended or single vineyardIt seems like a growing number of producers in Burgundy are producing single vineyard village wines, thus changing the tradition of blending the village wines in to one cuvee. For some producers it’s an old tradition, but for others it’s a new approach.
A slightly riper and darker fruited nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry and subtle spice and earth nuances. Here too there is excellent richness to the finer if not quite as dense flavors that are shaped by moderately firm tannins on the complex and sneaky long finish. The 2018 Meursault Village Rouge offers copious aromas of red cherry and blueberry fruit, cranberry jus and touches of rose petal.
As seen from the table the vines in several vineyards of very old, and this is perhaps one explanation for the extraordinary quality Coche achieve.
